In early 2003, we were delighted to purchase the Doe Bay Resort and Retreat. Since that time the resort has experienced a complete renaissance.
Having first visited Doe Bay as a teenager in 1970, I understood that we were buying a Northwest icon. The property had declined for a number of years and needed substantial investment and new enthusiasm.
There were several times when our resolve was tested, but we are excited to say that we have met most of our initial goals which were to keep the spirit and style of Doe Bay, while making it clean, safe, (island-style) efficient and hospitable.
We are using Doe Bay to test many theories about business and people. Our number one emphasis is on ethical treatment of our guests, our staff and the land. We understand that our business model is a longshot, but it is a unique opportunity to apply the values we hold dear.
One example is our on-site organic garden. Having been a vegetarian in the cattle feeding business in the early part of this decade, I reluctantly developed concerns about industrial food production. Having our own garden costs much more than buying produce off site but we believe you will taste the difference. Our goal in the café is to minimize the distance from “seed to table.”
Another example is advertising. We eschew traditional advertising in favor of word of mouth. If you have a good (or better yet, great) experience at Doe Bay, you will find our staff asking you to tell your friends, family and newspapers.
Maureen and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be the stewards of this remarkable piece of property. We are also pleased to be able to share it with you.
